As home schooling becomes more popular across America, more and more military and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian families are turning to this educational alternative. This article details some of the advantages and challenges of homeschooling while away from home.

Gulf Coast Christian Home Educators Association (GCCHEA) is a local homeschooler’s support group. It is run by volunteers and has cell groups of families grouped together either by location or by similar interests. GCCHEA hosts many and varied activities throughout the year for its members. Some of the activities in the past include Science Fairs, Art Fairs, Safety Day, Spelling Bees, Civil War Days, park days, Pilgrims’ Feast and Festival, Christmas Caroling and crafts, plus many others. There are also many exciting field trips both in and out-of-town. This is a large group of over 150 families from areas including Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton Counties, as well as military families living on the local military bases of Eglin, Hulbert, and Duke Field.

It is the policy of the DoDEA to neither encourage nor discourage DoD sponsors from home schooling their minor dependents. DoDEA recognizes that home schooling is a sponsor's right and can be a legitimate alternative form of education for the sponsor's dependents.
